Specifically, when something is exciting or wonderful, particularly when something is good news, ‘brilliant’ can mean as such.įor example, ‘You got the job? Oh, mate, that’s brilliant.’ ‘Brilliant’ is not a word exclusively in the British lexicon, but has a very British usage. The phrase comes from the expression, ‘it’s cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey’.įor example, ‘You need to wear a coat today, it’s brass monkeys outside.’ Very different to the ‘bollocks’ of the previous suggestion, a ‘bollocking’ is a telling-off or a severe or enthusiastic reprimand from a boss, co-worker, partner, or anyone you like, for a misdemeanour.įor example, ‘My wife gave me a real bollocking for getting to pick up the dry cleaning on my way home from work.’Ī more obscure British term, ‘brass monkeys’ is used to refer to extremely cold weather. ‘You slept with Kate Upton last night? Bollocks…’ and, of course, it also refers to the scrotum and testicles.įor example, ‘I kicked him right in the bollocks when he wouldn’t let me go past.’ ‘Oh bollocks’ it can also be used to express derision and mocking disbelief, e.g. Perhaps one of the most internationally famous British slang terms, ‘bollocks’ has a multitude of uses, although its top ones including being a curse word used to indicate dismay, e.g. In context, ‘Get the food, put in the microwave, heat it up, then bob’s your uncle, ready to eat.’ The origin of the expression is unknown, and is quite old, but is still in general use. For those unaware, the expression essentially used in the end of a series of basic instructions. The first form of this is far more common, and is sometimes used internationally. Or to use it as emphasis, ‘that’s bloody cool!’ In anger you might say, “oh bloody hell!” It is often used as an expression of anger or is used to emphasize a comment. In the past it was regarded as a swearword but now, due to its common usage, it is generally acceptable. You probably don’t need me to describe this, out of all British slang, this is by far the most popular and most commonly used. ‘Blinding’ is a positive term meaning excellent, great, or superb.įor example, ‘That tackle from the Spanish player was blinding.’īloke is an extremely common term denoting a man, usually it is used in reference to an ordinary man, akin to the US ‘average joe’, but it it not uncommon to hear it used to describe a man generally.Īs such, you can use it like this, ‘That bob is a good bloke.’ ‘Blinding’ – a slang term that is far from something that physically causes someone to lose their sight. ‘Blimey’ is used as a way of expressing surprise at something, often used when seeing or looking at something surprising or impressive instead of shocking or upsetting.įor example you might say ‘Blimey! Look at that!’ ‘All to pot’ refers to a situation going out of your control and failing miserably.įor example, ‘The birthday party went all to pot when the clown turned up drunk and everyone was sick from that cheap barbecue stuff.’ Slightly more of an outdated version, this British slang term is still used, and its meaning remains relevant today. Can also mean to pass something with flying colors.įor example, ‘Jenny is ace at the lab experiments’, or, for the latter definition, ‘I think I aced that exam’. ‘Ace’ – a British slang term that means something that is brilliant or excellent. While American slang has become nearly universal with the influx of TV shows, films, and other media filling the screens of a significant majority of the media-viewing global population, there is so much more available once you dig beneath the surface of British slang terms and can discover some real gems beneath the surface. British slang is a niche of its own, evolving and transforming and adapting from city to city and from year to year, just as the English language itself has done. Lastly, I've done all the tutorials here and try to pick up more along with lynda and virtual academy, but I feel like I can't retain anything because I don't apply it. My introduction to programming course had a complete refund due to the professor being too incompetent (seriously) which led to me going under 12 credit hours, which led to me losing the GI Bill for that semester, which led to me owing thousands of dollars to the school. Then I tried the college route, but only had enough money to do a crappy community college and it was fairly clear that most people teaching there had no idea how to teach or no idea how to code. I've tried to learn through several books, but they all had a total lack of contextualization and were often full of glaring errors. Pick something simple (again, really simple, like Pong) and see if you can make it work. You learn a lot more from action than anything else. So if you want to learn, the best way is to just do it. Once you understand the logic, it's just about understanding how your engine/framework API works and reading documentation (and hoping it's correct). This teaches the basics of writing a script, having a main loop, input controls, simple AI, manipulating graphics, text UI, states if you want a title screen or whatever. What I typically do is read a book or two on the subject, then give myself a small little project like making Pong (which I have done on loads of different platforms and languages). Nowadays the language syntax is not really the issue, I understand most of the basic concepts and they are the same for pretty much any language. I guess I taught myself programming, but I've read a ton of books over the years in all sorts of languages. In every medium there are certain things that create such a huge, irreversible impact on their respective industries that the shockwaves can be felt today Citizen Kane, The White Album, and Dwarf Fortress, and all these things also share an unfortunate disposition that most people wouldn’t go out of their way to experience them for the first time now, and who could blame them.ĭwarf Fortress, or Slaves to Armok: God of Blood Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress, is still used to this day in Acedemia for its use of artificial intelligence, and has been cited as influence for Minecraft, Rimworld, and others, as well as being selected among other games to be featured in the Museum of Modern Art to show the history of video gaming in 2012. I think I’ve prefaced this list enough, though, it’s about time we get into it: Finally, Indies had the chance to get their spotlight back, at least to those who would give them their dues. It was a place where you could bypass the publisher and get straight into the hands of the players. Steam was almost immediately a revitalisation of the indie scene. Having every game you could possibly want in one place without having to go to different stores across the internet, it was like the future, now.Īnd that’s where we’re going to pick up, the start of the modern age of gaming. Being able to go on your home computer, purchase and download as many games as you like was absolutely game-changing, no pun intended (well, maybe a little). With steam came a total shift to how everyone saw game distribution. It was bad for the developer, bad for the publisher, bad for the stores and led to rising game prices, making it bad to consumers. In the past you needed to just send out boxes and boxes full of games, for which they’d take a cut, and you’d have to hope they sold so that you get something back from it and don’t just lose all that money. Gabe Newell announced the service at GDC in 2002, and the service revolutionised the entire industry. The first iteration of Steam, that’s right, Valve’s Steam, it didn’t release properly until 2003, but even before that the effects of its existence were felt. The games you’d find in places like this were often simple affairs made in programs like Flash, the days of Indies going toe-to-toe with AAA releases seemed like a distant memory. At the end of the decade a whole new kind of indie game showed up as places on the internet were founded, people like Tom Fulp founded websites like Newgrounds, a play on website hosting space Neocities. Some smaller publishers, often created by the developers themselves, would exist purely to give all, or most of, a game away for free, in the hopes that appreciative players will fork out some money to support the devs and get the full experience.īy the mid-90s, the technology to create and distribute the quality and types of games that players expected just wasn’t available to small developers many single-A studios fell or were absorbed into larger entities during this time. “Dwarf Fortress is a very difficult, edgy game, but it is also an essential experience, a true celebration of the hidden potential of the videogame medium, which you will not find in any other game.” -Multiplayer.Video games exploded into a bustling market in the late 80s, and by the time you got to the early 90s, publishers were unlikely to just give away games for free, or take risks on unproven agents, so people had to find new and different ways of giving people a way to play their games. The depth on hand is stunning-there are dozens of types of soil alone, and the procedurally generated world even includes procedurally generated poetry and music-but so is the learning curve. Widely labeled "inscrutable" by the gaming press (though the new Steam release does, thankfully, include a tutorial), the once-ASCII-styled but now pixel art game is a complex blend of mining and construction simulation, colony management, story generator, and roguelike set in a dwarf-filled fantasy world. In December, DF's indie creators (and brothers) Zach and Tarn Adams finally put an updated Dwarf Fortress on sale for the first time, which could help it reach an audience of adventurous gamers beyond just fellow game developers and seekers of obscure entertainment. (#3) It's unusual when a "new" game is considered widely influential in the industry, but that is indeed the case for our PC exclusive of the year, which has been available as freeware in pre-release form for over 16 years (and in development for even longer) and whose influence can be seen in dozens of games ranging from Minecraft to RimWorld. You could argue that Extraction is a multi-million marketing effort simply to attract new blood. And Ubisoft is clearly hoping that Rainbow Six Extraction will funnel new players into Rainbow Six Siege, given the connective tissue. But by having Siege's Operators in Extraction, it's trying to appeal to that existing player-base as well. It's made for those who have no interest in PvP multiplayer titles like Rainbow Six Siege. Rainbow Six Extraction is a very calculated approach by Ubisoft. With no narrative-driven single-player mode for 14 years, it seems unlikely that we will ever get a Rainbow Six title with a proper campaign again. As many years between that and the launch of Rainbow Six Siege, as there approximately are between Siege and Rainbow Six Extraction. The wait continues for those wanting another Rainbow Six title with a proper single-player campaign-the last of those was Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 that released in 2008. There's no campaign though - no narrative or connective tissue, just a bunch of levels that you revisit over and over, which ultimately felt artificial and manufactured to me. It's now a co-op player-versus-environment (PvE) game, with squads of up to three players being sent into arenas to complete a series of objectives. As you can immediately tell, Rainbow Six Extraction is not a player-vs-player (PvP) experience unlike its mainline cousin. It brings Six Siege's roster of characters - or Operators, as they are known - to Extraction and thrusts them into an alternate reality where they must tackle an alien race known simply as the Parasite. And that's what we get with Rainbow Six Extraction, out Thursday globally.ĭrawn on the time-limited Rainbow Six Siege game mode Outbreak, Rainbow Six Extraction is a spin-off in principle. On the other hand, a new title (that appealed to a different gamer market) has seemed inevitable. On one hand, that's why there hasn't been a new Rainbow Six game for over six years now. As of two Decembers ago after launching on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, Rainbow Six Siege registered 70 million players across all platforms. Following early disappointment and massive amounts of developer support, Rainbow Six Siege - the series' online-only reboot launched in 2015 - has outlived all of Ubisoft's expectations and become a multi-year ongoing game (dubbed games-as-a-service in industry parlance). It’s important to note, that the only aspect of your progression that won’t follow you across platforms are your Achievements/Trophies.Īre you looking forward to utilizing the Cross-Play and Cross-Progression features? Let us know by getting involved in the conversation on Twitter, Instagram, Discord and Reddit.Rainbow Six Extraction, first and foremost, is an extension of a well-established IP. When launching the game, you will find your Operators, your progression, your content all ready and waiting for you. If you start your experience by playing on PC but want to switch over to the PS5 don’t worry, you’re covered. Your progression in the game and the content you earn through that progression will travel with you if you decide to start playing on a different platform. You have complete control over how you play Rainbow Six Extraction, so, if you prefer, you can also turn off the Cross-Play functionality to only play with people on your platform.Īnother feature we support that should help you when deciding where you play is Cross-Progression. This means that regardless of where you choose to play, you will be able to squad up your friends or matchmake with others on any of the platforms that you can play Rainbow Six Extraction on. Rainbow Six Extraction launches in January 2022 with full Cross-Play and Cross-Progression support for anyone playing on the PlayStation, Xbox, Stadia, or the PC Platform. In bony fishes, they have additional dermal bone, forming a more or less coherent skull roof in lungfish. Your skull is made up of two sets of bones - the bones of your face and the bones of your cranium, which make up your forehead and the back of your head. Only a few fishes like lampreys and sharks only possess cartilaginous endocranium, with both the upper and lower jaws being separate elements. Note: The skull of fishes is made from a series of only loosely connected bones. Last week, the contents of that little box found a new home when Kaufmann donated the bones to the Medical University of Vienna. With Emily Deschanel, David Boreanaz, Michaela Conlin, Tamara Taylor. Other sources conjecture that Russell modeled the society after European groups he encountered while studying in Germany. The temporal bones are paired bones that help make up the sides and base of the skull (cranium). According to some accounts, the society was formed after a dispute over elections to Phi Beta Kappa. The foramen magnum, which accommodates the spinal cord, is a large hole in the occipital bone. Skull and Bones was formed in 1832 by William Huntington Russell and Alphonso Taft. To see some examples of this, take a look at Acme, a library purpose built to use Launchpad for distributed reinforcement learning agents. On Wednesday, November 21, 2018, five of the country’s most brilliant and innovative minds will come together in support of UforChange with “The Talk” – a live panel discussion with producer/director and advertising executive Barry Avrich, ELLE Canada Editor-in-Chief Vanessa Craft, fashion designer Mikhael Kale, and technology entrepreneur G. Finally, as mentioned above the reason for Launchpad’s existence is to make complicated distributed systems simple to write and read. Obviously we have just scratched the surface! For more information about Launchpad take a look at our github repository for all of the code as well as some helpful examples and documentation. This node type bridges the gap between local and distributed computation, since from the perspective of the launched class they both look one and the same. This is a particular node implementation which, given a constructor to a python class, will create an instance of that class and expose its public methods to clients as a gRPC service. To make this process easier, Launchpad also provides CourierNode (named for our internal gRPC wrapper). However, Launchpad does have a little more to say about this communication mechanism, namely that the communication edges are exposed at runtime as calls to a gRPC service. However, by modifying or building upon launch we are able to (and do!) use this same mechanism for launching on multiple machines at once.Įdges in the Launchpad program denote that communication occurs between the two nodes, but not necessarily how it happens-that’s ultimately up to the nodes themselves. Right now we are releasing a version of this mechanism that runs this computation within different processes on a single machine. By implementing different launchers we are also able to target different backends. Launching the program is then as simple as passing it to a given launching mechanism, e.g. Passing a handle to another node at its creation time forms an edge in the communication graph. As nodes are added the system returns a handle to that node which can be used as a reference for that service. Interacting with Launchpad is a simple matter of creating an empty graph (a program) and incrementally adding nodes to it. on a single machine, a cloud provider, or on a self-hosted cluster). Further, by clearly separating the program definition, given by its graph data-structure, from the launching mechanism Launchpad can also be used to launch the same distributed system on different platforms (e.g. By making the graph representation explicit, Launchpad makes it easy to both design and later modify a program's topology in a single script-something that would not be possible were the system defined in a more decentralised or implicit fashion. The fundamental concept of Launchpad is that of a program, which represents computation as a directed graph of service nodes with edges in this graph denoting communication between nodes. To address this we have built Launchpad, a programming model that simplifies the process of defining and launching instances of distributed computation. This is due in large part to the fact that distributed communication is often implicit, which can obscure program flow in a way that makes such algorithms hard to reason about. Modern numerical frameworks-such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and JAX-have significantly contributed to recent advances in machine learning, however building complicated distributed systems with these tools can prove difficult. A programming model for distributed machine learning research The song was produced by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh. The song peaked at number 19 on the US Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart. It was released as the lead single from his fourth studio album, Lethal Injection (1993). Yippee ki yay mother f cker is a song by American rapper Ice Cube. Since then, the phrase has been used in a variety of films and television shows. uses it to express his excitement after overcoming an obstacle. In the 1988 film “Die Hard,” John “Jack” McMickle Jr. This expression can be used to express joy or to express excitement. The phrase “Yippee-ki-ya, motherfucker,” which is a favorite line of the film, is one of its most famous lines. Yippee-ki-yay, Motherfucker – The Most Famous Line From Die Hard The term arose in 1968 as a result of the hippie movement. A “yippy” is someone who belongs to a politically radical group of people. The tune’s title hints at a Bing Crosby song from the 1930s, albeit one that plays on the phrase “yippie yi yo kayah,” a refrain from the song. Yip refers to a young bird with a yip word as its middle name and was derived from the Spanish word yip, which means “to catch.” At its core, yawp means “boasting, vainglorious” and yopee means “boasting” in the Japanese. When Bruce Willis says “yippee-ki-ya” in Die Hard, he says it for the first time. It is an exclamation used to begin or frighten an opponent. The lyrics are easy to follow and the song is sure to get everyone singing along. It is a fun, upbeat song that will get everyone moving. The yippee ki-yay original song is a great choice for any party or event. Arjmand also attached an affidavit detailing his efforts in the dissolution action between August 2016 and December 2017 that ultimately resulted in his obtaining the pertinent rulings contained in the New Orders. The New Orders were attached as exhibits to the petition. The petition alleged that, in December 2017 and February 2018, Judge McJoynt had entered two orders in the dissolution case (New Orders) that bolstered Arjmand's previous arguments in this case about the proper scope of the 2013 Dissolution Order (and thus his arguments that the defendants' actions exceeded that scope). ¶ 8 On August 16, 2018, nearly two years after the entry of the August 2016 Order dismissing his complaint in this case, Arjmand (now represented by counsel) filed a section 2-1401 petition to "partially vacate" the August 2016 Order. It therefore dismissed Arjmand's complaint with prejudice as an improper collateral attack on the 2013 Dissolution Order. The trial court then cited legal authority for the proposition that arguments about an order entered in a dissolution case should be heard by the judge presiding over that case, and that an attempt to challenge the effects of a dissolution order in a different proceeding should be dismissed as improper. In fact, Arjmand had filed, in the dissolution case, a motion to compel those defendants to restore access to his account and that motion was scheduled for hearing in a few weeks. It noted that both Stogsdill and Morgan Stanley (which had been brought into the dissolution case as respondents to a citation to discover assets) were before Judge McJoynt, who was the proper person to address the scope of the 2013 Dissolution Order. ¶ 7 On August 17, 2016, after hearing oral arguments on the motions and stating that it had read and considered the briefs, pleadings, and exhibits submitted by the parties as well as the relevant case law they cited and "a good portion" of the pleadings in the dissolution action, the trial court granted the motions to dismiss this case (August 2016 Order). The two sets of defendants filed motions to dismiss the suit pursuant to section 2-619.1 of the Code ( 735 ILCS 5/2-619.1 (West 2014)), arguing that the complaint failed to state a cause of action and also that it should be dismissed as an improper collateral attack on the 2013 Dissolution Order. The complaint asserted claims of breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, tortious interference with prospective economic advantage, tortious interference with contract, and conversion. Weichbrodt and Neal, Gerber & Eisenberg, LLP (collectively, Morgan Stanley). ¶ 6 In 2015, Arjmand (acting pro se) filed the present lawsuit against Stogsdill and the various defendants affiliated with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, LLC, along with those entities' attorneys, the defendants Brody W. Morgan Stanley thereafter restricted Arjmand's access to his shares. Estes and The Stogsdill Law Firm (collectively, Stogsdill) wrote to Morgan Stanley, which held the shares at issue, to assert that Morgan Stanley should comply with the terms of the 2013 Dissolution Order. After the entry of that order, Muneeza's attorneys, the defendants Bryan S. ¶ 5 In 2013, the trial judge hearing the dissolution case, Judge Timothy McJoynt, entered an order (2013 Dissolution Order) restricting Arjmand's ability to cash in, transfer, encumber, or otherwise dispose of certain shares he held in Accenture, despite Arjmand's argument that the shares were nonmarital assets which he should be free to control. That dissolution action was still ongoing as of September 2018. ¶ 4 In 2009, Arjmand filed an action to dissolve his marriage to his wife, Muneeza Arjmand. Arjmand, appeals from the judgment of the circuit court of Du Page County that denied the petition he filed pursuant to section 2-1401 of the Code of Civil Procedure (Code) ( 735 ILCS 5/2-1401 (West 2016)). ¶ 1 Held: Although the manner in which the trial court denied the plaintiff's petition may have violated due process, any error was harmless in light of the petition's insufficiency as a matter of law. Presiding Justice Birkett and Justice Spence concurred in the judgment. JUSTICE SCHOSTOK delivered the judgment of the court. Appeal from the Circuit Court of Du Page County. NOTICE: This order was filed under Supreme Court Rule 23 and may not be cited as precedent by any party except in the limited circumstances allowed under Rule 23(e)(1). |
